Field Note

In the dim light of a Michigan dawn, a male Northern Cardinal descends upon a tray dusted with fresh snow. His crimson plumage provides a startling contrast against the white as he deftly sorts through sunflower seeds, discarding the hulls with practiced precision. As the morning progresses, a rare visitor appears in the form of a melanistic Eastern Gray Squirrel. This shadow-colored variant moves close to the lens, its dark fur absorbing the winter light while it meticulously sniffs out the most nutritious seeds hidden beneath the snow. The social order of the feeder is revealed in a swift succession of guests, beginning with the cardinal and followed by a hungry American Robin. Their peaceful meal is eventually interrupted by the arrival of a European Starling, whose assertive presence forces the others to take flight and wait their turn. An American Robin returns to sift through the dried mealworms, remaining remarkably calm as a black dog wanders through the backyard. This moment highlights the delicate coexistence between the wild inhabitants of the garden and the domestic animals that share their territory. Finally, the frenetic energy of the American Red Squirrel takes over as one individual claims the tray for itself. While it feeds, a second squirrel dashes across the snow-covered ground in the distance, a reminder of the constant competition for calories in these sub-zero temperatures.
