Field Note

At the break of dawn, the Eastern Screech Owl settles into its wooden sanctuary to escape the growing light. It shifts its weight upon a bed of shavings and feathers, gazing toward the entrance while the world outside transitions into the day. The midday hours are characterized by a profound stillness as the bird conserves its energy. Only a brief ruffling of feathers breaks the silence, a vital act of maintenance that keeps its plumage in prime condition for insulation against the Michigan winter. As the light fades in the late afternoon, the owl becomes industrious, leaning forward to manipulate the substrate with its beak. It carefully rearranges the mix of shavings and dark feathers, an instinctive behavior that ensures its winter retreat remains functional and comfortable. With dusk approaching, the bird engages in deliberate nest site preparation, meticulously tidying its surroundings. These man-made boxes provide essential refuge where natural hollows are scarce, allowing us a rare glimpse into the private diligence of these nocturnal predators. Finally, the owl appears at the threshold, its keen eyes scanning the snowy ground and the nearby maple trees. With a sudden, graceful movement, it launches into the twilight air, leaving the box empty as it begins its hunt in the deepening night.
